Sponge material - contrary to the term "sponge" - not as absorbent as a regular kitchen sponge. More like a grouting sponge in terms of absorbency. The abrasive surface works just as well as any and was reasonably durable. The sponge doesn't feel as comfortable as a regular dishwashing sponge, but it works well enough. If you wiped the counter it wouldn't work as it just pushes the liquid forward instead of absorbing it; For washing up or heavier work this works well enough and lasts well enough.
