Review on πŸ”€ ASUS RT-AC56R - Dual-Band 802.11ac Wireless-AC1200 Gigabit Router with AiRadar Technology and USB Ports by Steve Harris

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works well in a small house, heats up

Was 'new' in a sealed box, date of manufacture 2015. I installed the Asuswrt Merlin firmware following the instructions on their website . Everything went smoothly. The router's Ethernet offers a full 65/5 connection speed on the connected desktop, according to speed test sites. 5GHz works well for two Roku sticks (2016 model). Both deliver a good picture with smooth playback (both show "good" signal strength in the on-screen menus). One Roku is next to the router and the other is 20 feet away through 3 walls. 2.4 GHz is used for two tablets. We were able to throttle the 2.4 GHz transmission power by one level without any problems, which made the router run a little cooler. It has no fan and runs at 73 degrees C for the CPU and 48 degrees C for Wi-Fi. I've read that's normal, but I'm thinking some sort of cooler. Update 6 months later: Using a 120mm silent fan as a cooler (next to it). The processor is now idle at 60C. Also installed the "FreshTomato" firmware. So far, so good.

Pros
  • Good workmanship
Cons
  • Availability for exchange
