We redone our closets before we put our house up for sale. We had an 80's style old dark wood. They tore down the doors and hardware, washed everything with soap and water, and then sandpapered it with liquid. After letting it dry, they did everything in two coats. We had a few cracks, but we just hand sanded them, applied more liquid sandpaper and they leveled out. I feel like the few cracks we had were due to poor preparation. We did this some time ago and the house is about to be sold. With a wild two-year-old and a strong nine-year-old, the paint was stable under normal use and had no problems. Just two coats (some people applied three) allowed this system to cover the old dark wood perfectly. We didn't do it in one day, in general it took us almost a week, took our time and got everything right.
