I bought this device because my 3rd generation device finally gave up after 26 years. I just couldn't afford a new one. With this device, images were decent up to a distance of about 400 meters with the ambient light available in my rural area. I had a partial moon plus ambient ground lighting from neighboring houses. I could make out cows in the fields across from me, 200 to 300 meters away. If you are looking for an inexpensive device that can see a person at a distance of 100-200 meters for safety reasons, then this device will do the trick. Especially if the person is moving. I think this device's good images are due to the large exit pupil of the large 50mm lens. The downside is that there's no bright light protection like my old Gen 3. If you scan into bright light near the ground you end up with total blur. The hose can be damaged. The curious thing is that when I turn off the device, the LED goes out, but the amplifier tube continues to burn for a few minutes. This means that you have to put the rubber cap on the lens in order not to damage the tube. I am satisfied with the images I get from this device and I recommend it. It's not 3rd gen, but it's not $3,000 either. It would be better to use it near the ground without bright light and rely only on the light of the stars and the moon. IR light is very good when there is no ambient light. There are 2 different focus knob settings. I just had to play around with both to get the best focused image. One handle is around the exit lens and the other around the eyepiece. Just play by ear to get the best focus. There isn't a big one. Beyond 25 or 30 meters you could not see the red light emitted by the IR light. This can be important if you are trying to remain undetected when scanning the area.
