Not quite sure about fire safety

I bought 2 of these to install in our boat cabin as we run the alternator for the air conditioning. For fun I plugged them into 2 power strips on opposite sides of my garage and ran my portable generator by the door. nothing closed both garage doors a little wait wait . Nothing. Both doors closed and waited a few minutes - finally one walked out. (Yes I did a print to check and all went well.) I dropped one, started the generator and literally placed the detectors in the exhaust path. Nothing. I would think a lot more than 400ppm is claimed. Maybe I'm missing something, but I won't trust my life to these things. I could disinfect my garage for termites with the amount of fumes in the garage. Guess I'll try Kidde's product instead as they've been used in the fire safety game for a while.
