Even after the steam cleaning, I still had to get on all fours and scrub with Resolve, which brightened it up a lot. And for stubborn stains (like my daughter spilling tea on the carpet) I used a baking soda/peroxide/dishwashing liquid mix, so basically doing just those two things and avoiding the steam cleaning got me out better. My carpets are of course about 12 years old so I'm not saying it can't be done - it just didn't work with my two dogs and my old carpets.
