Review on DFM Blue Curved Cabinet Scraper by Kenny Kowalewski

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This set was originally promised

My training in edge tools such as furniture scrapers and hand planes began under the guidance of a Swiss descendant. Firstly, these are extreme instruments. Second, there are different types of hand tools for very different purposes than furniture scrapers. Third, this type of scraper has a microscopically curved cutting edge. This is accomplished by 1) sharpening the edge at a 90 degree angle to the sides, 2) honing that edge with a fine grit grindstone, 3) preferably holding the scraper in a vice while holding the polishing tool firmly in a constant angle is held about 25° down. 30 degrees from the 90 degree edge and pull the polishing tool toward you in one long, continuous motion. The result should be a tiny, razor-sharp edge. Different types of wood, texture, density, curing react differently. Soft, dense wood is difficult in that the pressure of the scraper as you pull crushes the fibers rather than cuts the wood. When done correctly, this gives a finish (transparency or widow) in the character of the wood. I have found that this can be addressed with abrasive grinding steps, but not at the same level of quality that these scrapers can produce in my opinion. Wood prepared in this way requires penetrating polymerization oils. One more note about these tools. The steel must have sufficient strength. plasticity, hardness.
