The childproof opening mechanism works. We use this gate at the top of our stairs to keep the child from falling down the stairs while crawling and somersaulting. The distance between the bars is small, but some small children may have their heads caught, even though our child is a big child and the gate is safe for our child. while these gates offer slight adjustment of the width of the doorway. The installation is not much, you only have a few centimeters to adjust the width of the door. and assembling the gate was very confusing. but it only lasted about 5 minutes. It seems like a reliable $60 kid's gate and is a lot easier to use than those old wooden gates. Just press the opening buttons twice and the gate will (usually) open and close automatically. If it doesn't close automatically, just make sure the gate is closed.
