I had to shorten a new chain and wanted to try it myself instead of taking the bike to the shop. This tool helped me, but it wasn't that easy. I'm not an experienced bike mechanic, so maybe I just need some practice, but a few key takeaways from my use (it could be me, it could be the tool, or maybe it is). seen enough videos explaining that it was NOT necessary to push the pen all the way out of the last xref (to make it easier to put the pen back in later). Since you can't see the pin coming out, it was hard to tell how far to turn further. The pen came out completely the first time. It wasn't a total hindrance after all, it was just more difficult to mount the chain after the links were removed. - After removing the first pin, I noticed that the metal "rails" on the device were actually being bent out by the force on the pin. I was careful trying to center the pin follower and I don't think I've ever just pressed the whole link, but I was surprised to see the metal bend. Luckily, that softness also meant it could easily be bent back with a flathead screwdriver, but overall I'd expect this part of the device to be heat treated for strength rather than flexibility. The (minimal) instructions show how to break through the chain but not climb back in. Again, the internet is full of instructions, but this was a little tricky (especially since I had to try to hold onto the needle after it came all the way out in step 1!). It served its purpose and I think it would have been a little easier with time, but the softness of the metal and the lack of instructions don't let me rate it.
