When I opened my mailbox one day, the key broke off in the lock. The lock was old and unreliable anyway; I ordered one of these as a replacement. I chose this lock because the key looks just like the key to the old lock. To replace the lock, installation was easy: just remove the old lock, adapt the locking lever on the old mailbox lock to one of the five included in the kit, and secure the lock to the mailbox with the two nuts provided. (The instructions mentioned a screw, but the unit itself uses a nut instead.) This took about five minutes, including walking from my apartment to the box and back. Compared to the old dirty lock this one replaced. , it opens much smoother and safer but feels very secure on the box door. However, I'm not worried about the absolute security of this lock: if someone wants to steal my mail, they are much more likely to pick the mail lock, which opens the whole box at once. This is an easy do-it-yourself fix to a common problem that locksmiths or the post office would charge tens of dollars to fix.
