The surface must be metal, 100% dry and clean. I had to attach a suction cup to the bottom of the boat as the seats were wooden. Depending on your application - my handheld fish finder was used fishing in Canada - you may need to modify the suction cup assembly. I had to alternate drilling holes and using a block of wood to secure the base. In general, I recommend the suction cup. When I could keep the bottom of the cup clean and the bottom of the boat clean and dry, the suction power was fantastic.
