Review on πŸ’Ύ Efficient Data Storage: BUFFALO LinkStation 210 4TB Home Office Private Cloud with Included Hard Drives by Alex Maynard

Simple drive that restarts automatically after a power outage

We have three 2TB Linkstation 210's and are very happy with this product. They replaced 12 year old Buffalos which were rock solid but have had power issues lately (dried lids). They also had to be restarted after power outages. I'm happy to report that the new 210s are autoloading. UPS is not required. External power supply. I see a lot of negative feedback here, probably due to the lack of documentation and the "walk-me-through-all-process" setting. To be honest, I don't even deal with software. The buffalo find the house via dhcp by default, I use a network scan to find them and then log in as admin. It takes about 2 minutes to start signing up and setting up. As soon as I change the admin password, set a static IP address, rename the drive, enable FTP and other services, it's ready to use. For those worried about server message block changes, this device is SMBv2, which is currently appreciated by Windows 10. It works great with our Win 10, MAC and Linux Mint machines. Supports Time Machine and has an integrated printer and media server. Built-in incremental backup with an external USB drive. It doesn't have an easily accessible setting for every little thing as it's designed for home use, but it gets the job done. In conclusion, if you are familiar with NAS and networking then this should work great for you. If not, then apparently Buffalo needs to sit down and figure out a way to run it for non-techies. Perhaps a video library to accompany the knowledge base PDFs. Consider how to explain what a router is, how to log in, and set up a firewall to forward ports. How to map a network drive. Or these days, just find a 10-year-old to help you with that.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Unreliable
