Unfortunately, GlaxoSmithKline, a large company as is often the case, bought BIOTENE from Laclede, Inc. in late 2008. A few years later, the Company took the original BIOTENE flavor and added several inferior products that they tried to compare. Apparently, GSK discontinued the "original flavor" because adding salivary enzymes to the product costs a little more. But it's OK. $10 for a liter bottle, which is by no means cheap. So GLK simply saved a few cents to increase its profits through loyal BIOTENE customers. Apparently Laclede would have a non-compete for about 10 years old but is again producing the original BIOTENE flavor now marketed as SALIVEA dry mouth care. Today SALIVEA only produces the product in small quantities, around half a liter bottle, but hopefully both small and large bottles will soon be available. Highly recommend SALIVEA and avoid BIOTENE at all costs. For what BIOTENE offers, the price must not be more than half of the current price. GSK is still trying to outlast the excellent reputation of Laclede, Inc.'s Biotene.
