I bought this item for my desktop computer to work with my R7000 router. Even if it's only USB 2.0 (important for the transmission speed from my desktop to my file server connected directly to the router). When connected to the n-area, they worked fine together for a while, and performed better than my desktop's internal card. AC performance was erratic and sometimes I had to restart the computer to get it working again (Windows 7, all device drivers up to date, etc.). My router has a line of sight from where this adapter is located about 15 feet. So signal strength is not a problem. And I don't run anything else on the AC frequency at home. After I upgraded my desktop computer to Windows 8.1 Pro the problems got worse and now I had to restart my computer a lot more times to get the adapter back. Work. I've updated all USB drivers, reinstalled Netgear drivers, messed around with device manager settings, disabled other devices that might be interfering with this adapter, searched online discussions and forums, but nothing helped. The Netgear drivers for Windows 8 (they have a beta version) brought only a small improvement. For now, I'm back to using my slower but more reliable internal Wi-Fi card. The adapter lies dusty on the table. I definitely cannot recommend this device. I will buy something that will hopefully be a lot more reliable. I am currently considering the following options: - Edimax Wireless AC1200 USB 3.0 Dual Band Adapter - ASUS AC1900 PCI-E Dual Band Wireless Adapter - Intel WiFi cards
