Oops expensive filter. Serves its purpose but is very expensive. My suggestion - buy and change less often. Next time you change it, wear safety goggles, take the used filter outside and place it on a hard surface. Hit it hard with a sharp object (e.g. an axe) and break the plastic case. Insight. I found the charcoal filter to be clean and the outer layer of white paper to be clean. Yes, I know we can't visually see the chemicals trapped in the charcoal filter, but I contend that changing every 6 months is probably overkill in a household with light use of ice/chilled water. Replace annually instead of every 6 months and cut your costs in half. Just my suggestion
