Very interesting lens

This is a bit of a fancy lens, in a good way. In the sense that once you get a feel for what he does (and doesn't do), you'll get some great results. This is absolutely NOT a lens that will give consistent results across the entire aperture range. Take a shot at f/1.2 and you'll see what I mean. Shoot wide open with this lens and you'll get heavy vignetting, soft shapes and contours, and very soft corners. These problems quickly disappear and at f/2 they are almost invisible to the average viewer. Work with the lens wide open and enjoy what it has to offer. If you like adding vignetting to your photos anyway, this issue won't bother you that much and you can always tone it down when posting. At f/1.2, the depth of field is very shallow, so precise focusing is paramount. If you can focus and pinpoint depth of field exactly where you want it, this lens can do wonders at the widest apertures. - Journalistic day lens at medium aperture (e.g. f/4, f/5.6). Image quality is at its best in this range, as images are very sharp, there are no noticeable aberrations or color fringing, and vignetting is gone. Corners remain sharp and no light is lost as you move from center to corner. As is typical of Nikon quality, focusing is a pleasure. The focus ring rotates smoothly, and if you'd rather focus and recompose, the focus ring stays where you left it while you adjust the camera position. Considering it's a 50mm lens, it's quite small, but it's not the lightest 50mm lens out there. My guess is that it has to do with the extra glass needed to get it to f/1.2. Once you get used to how this lens responds to different apertures, you'll be amazed at how flexible it can be. The lens has nothing to do with the performance of the famous Noct. Don't assume the results are the same just because they both open at f/1.2. You will be very disappointed. And like I said, if you're expecting this lens to capture the standard image quality that the 50 f/1.4 gives you, you'll be disappointed again. This lens is ready for a lot of work at the f/1.2 focal length, but if you get an accurate shot, you'll be rewarded with unique shots. This is a great lens for the experienced photographer who likes to work with shallow depth of field and highlight objects against creamy bokeh backgrounds.
