I had a 12 year old Ferret Nation double level 142 cage and wanted to upgrade it for a new ferret shop. For those unaware of the differences, the older 14X cages are bolted together and have a different style of shelf (a flat plastic insert is inserted into a metal shelf, leaving some of the metal exposed at the top). newer 18X models mount with a pin system and have shelves instead of a plastic insert. Aside from the above differences, the cells are the same. As I was getting ready for new ferrets after the old cage sat unused in the garage for a while, the heat in the garage warped my old shelves and I liked the design of the cage. Plastic shelves are better anyway. In short, YES these shelves work great with an old cage and you also get an upgrade to a newer/safer style for your ferrets! After decorating my cage, my ferrets were very happy in their new homes! Besides, with plastic shelves, it is very easy to cut the bathroom floor mat, making the shelf more convenient!
