Review on ๐Ÿ“š LeapFrog LeapPad Academy Learning Tablet: Revolutionizing Education for Kids by Rick Bear

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A little disappointed, but only initially and perhaps unjustified (see update 5/19)

Update: My original rating has been replaced with this current one because I felt it was important to me To inform Revain (and LeapFrog) buyers of what I consider to be unnecessarily poor user interface and technical issues that I feel detract from the otherwise excellent quality of this product. This review may be premature as I am not fully familiar with LeapFrog's LeapPad device. I'm a little lacking in understanding of the gameplay in general, but I'm particularly confused by the UI, which I miss so much. For context: I'm the older guy and grandfather of the recipient. I'm not really an Android freak, but a Windows PC oriented guy who understands everything but gaming. An example scenario comes to mind when purchasing a gaming app. First, I stumbled upon my granddaughter's well-known favorite Paw Patrol on the LeapFrog website in the games section. I clicked on it and just followed the steps to purchase. Nothing after payment! I felt like LeapFrog walked out of the room with my payment and slammed the door as he left. There was no mention of how to go about installing the app on my granddaughter's LeapPad and searching for clues turned up nothing. I followed my Windows instinct and returned to LeapPad and started looking for evidence that the app was downloaded or at least recently available for download, but I found none. You can expect to receive a notification from LeapPad Apps at this point with instructions on how to access My Newly Purchased App, or at least a library button somewhere that shows a list of purchased apps for you to choose to download from though oh well! Eventually I got tired of the effort and gave it up temporarily in the hope that the break would come later (and it happened in a totally unexpected way). I couldn't find any instructions on how to get started, so I fiddled around with LeapPad and dug into some of the top-level icons to see what the fuss was about. I finally got to parental settings and after activating with a PIN that I had to create, I found the Paw Patrol app icon in the app's activation settings, where I had to check a box for the app to appear under my granddaughters became. applications. Eventually, the missing application issue was resolved, but with great difficulty. The issue could have been avoided by a popup on the website directing me to the parental controls on LeapPad, or a popup in LeapPad indicating that I have a new app that I can enable in the parental controls.

Pros
  • Practical thing
Cons
  • I don't really like it, everything is fine
