My house is 1905 and covered in thick old hard paint. This tool is amazing and penetrates paint easily. If you're still having trouble scraping, try a completely different blade or angle. Believe it or not, for flat surfaces I've used a large blade with a straight blade and a U-shaped edge, and the U-blade works really well! As soon as I get closer to the wood's surface, I start with a straight blade to smooth it out. The blades are easy to swap out, but since this tool is quite cheap, I might buy another one and attach two different blades so I can quickly switch back and forth. This will come in handy as some of my jewelry have flutes that are thinner.
