The lever in the handle comes up, you put the blade on the end of the handle, and when you push the lever back into the handle it locks the blade very tight. Before I bought this I had a similar tool that cost more, didn't have an easy blade change, but had a much stronger metal shaft with a soft grip. The blades are thick and strong enough, they do not bend and strong enough, they can be sharpened if desired. The handle is probably the weak point though, I don't see it straightening out over time.
