These pens look good just the way they are. I don't notice a big difference between SOFT, MEDIUM and HARD. I thought it would be more pronounced, like my graphite pencils. Pencils are supplied unsharpened. I used my electric sharpener and they sharpened perfectly. No breakage so far, further use allows better understanding of their strength when sharpened. The nice thing is that the barrels have grooves so they don't roll across your table (and then probably break the charcoal inside). The box they come in also has little grooves to keep them in place if you'd rather store them in order of hardness. They fit nicely with a fingertip (I've experimented with carbon drawing paper). Im Compared to loose charcoal, it definitely helps keep your fingers clean!
