Review on MSD 8350 Ready To Run Pro Billet Distributor by Jack Enhanced

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Don't buy Ready-To-Run.spark weak idle. Buy a model that requires an MSD ignition box, even if it costs more.

I bought this to replace the Ford DuraSpark II ignition on my 1978 Ford LTD (335 series 351M-400 engine). 400. From day one of installation the car didn't start well and the engine jerked, over revved and stalled when the battery voltage was a little low, the headlights were on or I turned on the air conditioning. The triple combination of turning on the air conditioning, turning on the headlights, turning on the wipers and stopping at a traffic light was a recipe for stopping. After over a year of troubleshooting (I knew I had a spark), adding the matching MSD Blaster II coil, all new spark plug wires, new Pingel fuel filter, rebuilt Edelbrock Performer carburetor, new fuel pump, etc. I decided to add MSD. #6425 Ignition. Now the car drives like a champ! No more stops. Perfect (rough idle due to cam) with all electrical accessories included. The problem was what I suspected: at a lower voltage, this operational distributor produces little (or no) spark - much worse than the OEM setup! So my advice is to purchase a Pro Billet MSD distributor for your application that is NOT ready to go and spend the extra $230 or so on an MSD ignition box or use an existing OEM setup. This thing was a nightmare as a standalone product. Another tidbit - make sure you bend up the top tab on your rotor so it fits snugly into the center knob on the distributor cap - mine wasn't bent enough out of the box (and I obviously forgot to bend it myself ) because I also have an electrical arc and some black debris around the rotor knobs. totally my fault but check your app and adjust for safe contact.

Pros
  • Easily adjustable mechanical advance with springs and stop bushings included
Cons
  • Generally good but...
