Katadyn is a great filter and these discs help keep debris out of the filter media. It is important to understand that filtering water with sediment will drastically reduce the life of the filter, since this device (Vario) is actually a PURIFIER. I have now used it to purify really nasty water and it has worked great. When you're on the go, sometimes this is your only option. But it kills the filter. This ceramic "pre-filter" disk is cleaned with a green sponge (or if mine went really bad I used steel wool). This is just a replacement for the default item and it works great.
