As many of you know, I purchased a "Fishers Supply" combo - rod and reel for $25.00 at the Arkadelphia, Arkansas Goodwill store on August 8th, 2016. It has been just over two years since I purchased this combo and it's time for another review about the fishing gear that is sold in second hand shops around the world.
This particular item was purchased from Goodwill Industries Store #286 located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The manager on duty said he didn't think they were selling well because people thought they were made out of plastic (he actually said Styrofoam). He went on to say that there were only three left in stock and that he gives them away to employees or anyone who wants one.
The box says "Fishermans Supply" so it appears that this is a two man operation located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. More than likely they are selling these combos all over the United States and have been doing so for quite some time. I contacted them by phone to see if they would answer some questions but after being on hold for 10 minutes I was transferred to voice mail where I left my name and number with pretty much no hope of ever getting a return call. The owner or manager did return my call three days later - he said he had surgery which was why he wasn't returning my calls sooner - you make the decision as to whether or not you want to believe him! He said he found out how people were discovering the plastic rods and he started adding a written disclaimer on the box saying "Look, these are Styrofoam!".
I have been fishing with this combo for just over two years now. I have fished from the banks of ponds as well as from kayaks - it has been wet, extremely cold and hot - pretty much everything you can think of to see how the combo would hold up under some tough conditions. In my opinion it is still going strong although there is a small crack in one of the eyelets at one end of the reel so I had to cut out some extra line to run through that eyelet so tight line won't pull through. The first year I used barbless hooks so if I wanted a fish unhooked
Fishers Supply is a fishing company that sells combos to secondhand stores across the US. It's been two years since I purchased my rod and reel from Arkadelphia, Arkansas Goodwill store #286 for $25.00 - it has held up well under tough conditions but does have one crack in an eyelet of the reel which caught me by surprise when I tried to cast line out with barbless hooks (I had forgotten about this).
