Review on πŸ’‘ Victron Energy MultiPlus 3000VA 24V Pure Sine Wave Inverter with 70A Battery Charger by Troy Early

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent performance and value. 13 months full-time without absences.

Update 02/24/2020: Added second MultiPlus to work in parallel with the first. Very easy to set up this way. The increased power removed all overload warnings (when exceeding 2000 watts). I haven't been able to load more than 4000w yet, so not sure how that will perform, but I'm sure it will look and behave the same. Since my nightly standby loads are so light, both inverters reduce consumption to AES. Power saving mode. This means that the power consumption of both inverters in night-time operation is the same or less than with a single MultiPlus. It's nice to have redundancy. So if one needs maintenance or breaks down, I can quickly reprogram to still power the place. Update from December 1st, 2019: The new firmware is now independent of the operating system. You may need a windows box to install the inverter with the correct firmware version, but after that all you need is a device with a USB port. β€”β€”β€” Thirteen months and everything is fine. Good: Works absolutely as advertised. a bit confused about VA and kW so I went to buy a little uninformed. Basically, let's assume it's a 2kW permanent inverter that can easily handle 3kW inverters for at least half an hour at reasonable temperatures. First of all, powered by solar panel and battery for 12 months without any problems. The monitoring bluetooth dongle was amazing. However, don't wait as long as I did to connect it to a Venus OS device. Having historical data and real-time performance metrics at your fingertips, wherever you have an internet connection, is invaluable. All connections are clearly marked and easy to reach. The device is very well made and reliable. I only had to tighten the two screws on one side once after several months of use. I haven't treated them with Loctite, but they haven't loosened up even after being moved. Charging from a Generator: The ability to start softly and limit the amount of power I get from my generator is a great feature. I was able to tune the unit so that the generator produced maximum power per gallon of fuel and also didn't over-discharge it. Customizable charge profile for LiFePO4 (3rd party) was spot on. Support: The few questions I had were answered surprisingly quickly, in a friendly and helpful manner. Even if my questions weren't worded very well. Things to note: It's pretty heavy. It's pretty cumbersome. If you want to update firmware or settings yourself, YOU MUST USE WINDOWS. I'm not a Windows shop so I was a little annoyed that out of all the Victron devices I own this is OS independent. I had to unplanned throw away a few hundred dollars on a cheap windows box. Still! Worth the price of admission for me. According to my shunt (BMV712) the device draws 35W when idle. A bit more than the spec says but I couldn't figure out where the extra 10W is coming from. The shunt may not be perfectly calibrated. It hums under various loads, so if you don't like the occasional blue box hum, don't install it where you need perfect silence. If you charge more than 80A for a long time. , expect the fan to reach full speed and heat the room up a bit. Bad: Haven't found anything really bad yet. I'll update when I do. (Also I only have one. I'll be getting another one in 2020 so I have a spare so I can plug it in to support the hardware the site will need during construction.)

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
