Birds don't care much about this

We set up 3 birdhouses to attract nesting birds. We also produce coir, alpaca fur and raw cotton as nesting material. Birds made nests in our bird feeders but showed little interest in coir or raw cotton. We bought alpaca fur through Revain but were told it is readily available from alpaca farms within 30 miles of our home who also display their produce in garden stores etc. Of the three materials we provided, alpaca fur is mainly used. . We live next to an open field and an open forest. But we have found that birds are more likely to use dead grass, pine needles, small twigs, feathers and rabbit fur that they find to build their nests than the materials we provide. The raw raw cotton came in a cage that was firmly attached to the pad, so we threw it away as soon as it arrived. It will be difficult to reuse this cage, so we will probably throw it away in the fall. The alpaca fur and coco fiber were purchased without a dispenser, so I placed them in a cage designed for large blocks of fat, mealworms, or nuts and seeds. I found that the materials were difficult for the birds to reach unless they were very loosely packed and hanging from the holes between the bars in the cage. What we thought we needed for one season could easily last for two or three.
