I attached the lamp to the cabinet ceiling. It's bright enough to illuminate the top of hanging clothes, but dims when looking at things on the floor. The increase in battery depends on how often you turn on the light. Mine is activated 4-5 times a day. I get about 6 1/2 months use from the Rayovac Hi Energy battery pack. The manufacturer's application for 1 year must meet some optimal conditions. The sensor is very sensitive, so when mounting, do not place it within range of the area you do not wish to activate. It lights up for me when I step out of my open closet, even if I don't want to look in the closet.
