Bora) as I climbed to an elevation with winds in excess of 35mph and despite my best qualities was blown over the top of Mount King

What can I say - my explorer saved my life. I was paragliding in one of Idaho's most remote areas, the Lost River Range (home to Idaho's highest mountain, Mount Bora), when I ascended to 11,000 feet in winds exceeding 35 mph and despite all my efforts, including the max speedbar , I was blown over the top of Koenigsberg - my worst paragliding fear has now come true. Once downwind I experienced several (full) rotor induced wing collapses but somehow recovered from each and ended up landing far, FAR. far from the landing zone because of the strength of the prevailing wind - no one knew where I landed. The sun was setting when I finally landed in no man's land and NO ONE knew where I ended up when I was on earth. the wrong side of a very high crest. After struggling with the conditions for an hour and a half, I was finally on approach - at that moment I was flying backwards due to the wind speed, but despite this I was not injured on landing. I ended up in the middle of a remote tall sagebrush forest - unharmed and so for obvious reasons (including the $10,000 search and rescue helicopter cost) didn't want to send an SOS signal for general evacuation, so I was glad I had a device able to communicate with the outside world in real-time - my ability to chat two-way with my contacts not only automatically gave them information about my exact location via a hyperlink to the Delorme map, but also gave me a GREAT peace of mind as if I had never felt totally lonely or hopeless as I was able to speak despite texting. Unlike Spot, my Delorme Explorer allowed me to contact several people on my contact list and explain my situation, and they were able to respond appropriately and with updates on my "rescue" via satellite, since there was no cell phone contact. That being said, my iPhone was invaluable because of the Delorme Earthmate app I downloaded - no cellular connection required as Explorer and smartphone communicate via Bluetooth. The Earthmate smartphone app gets all the information it needs via the Explorer's Bluetooth connection, e.g. B. Detailed maps, longitude/latitude and more. This allowed me to see exactly where I was on a map on the large and colorful screen of my smartphone. Just as importantly, the Earthmate app (a free download with a Delorme subscription, btw) allowed me to send long text messages quickly and easily via a bundled app that can't be over-hyped. Although File Explorer has the ability to create texts offline, when sending long messages (scroll - click, scroll down - click, scroll up - click, etc. etc.) it takes quite a while for the messages to look like on generated on the smartphone normal message which is then sent via bluetooth to the explorer and then to satellites, pretty smooth and VERY fast! My contacts received my messages for an average of 20 seconds - about the same time in a reply message from them. With every SMS, my contacts got a link to a map so they knew exactly where to find me. I was so lost I had to start a fire knowing it would take someone hours or even all night to find me, but they finally found thanks to my discoverer sending them real-time map info - it took several hours so they drove straight to me coordinates. Bottom line, I can almost guarantee that if I didn't have the Explorer with me (almost left it in my truck) I would never be found - at least not until it was too late as I didn't have water. , unforgiving rocky terrain, lack of direct roads, and a healthy population of wolves and mountain lions in the area. Thank you Delorme From now on, I will always include you in my adventures because you never know when you will be backed into a reckless corner.
