Can't read many discs

Purchased in March 2017 because I just got a new computer with an SSD with no DVD drive and figured I might need to write/read/write a disc for something sometimes. So this "something" happened yesterday: I had some old DVDs that I burned 10 or 12 years ago and put in a drawer. They had old data files that I now wanted to upload to my cloud storage system. I know that DVDs and CD-ROMs don't hold data forever and will disappear after a while, and I wanted to erase the data before it became unreadable. This brand new, never used DVD drive had all sorts of problems reading those discs. One minute I could read files and the next minute I couldn't read them. I would reboot and try again and get the same intermittent pattern. Then I tried a brand new set of CorelDraw tutorial DVDs I just received. She couldn't even read that DVD drive. It wasn't lack of effortβ€”I could hear the drive mechanism clicking back and forth, but it couldn't seem to find what it was looking for. But it worked fine on another DVD that was a year old, as well as a movie DVD that's also about a year old. on the original DVD burner that came installed on my 6 year old laptop - this was replaced with a new SSD based laptop but thankfully was still functional. No problems with the problem drives, so I can't conclude that they were just bad or outdated drives. When a 6 year old DVD reader outperforms a new one, it means something is wrong with the new one. For me, this type of gear doesn't work on a guess-and-miss basis. Unfortunately, I waited until Revane's return period was up before even opening this device and found it totally unsuitable for the task. Maybe you get what you pay for here. It was cheap; but still. God.
