Review on Stay Cozy in Extreme Cold with JB Field's -50 Below Icelandic Socks: Knee Length, Extra Warm Wool Cushion - 2 Pairs by Black Holstead

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very thick, good quality but loose. No hiking sock.

I wear men's shoes in size 10-1/2. My feet are medium wide. I ordered the big ones. This is just a first impression rating based on fit and feel as I have not used them in extremely cold conditions. These socks are very thick. The thickest wool socks I've ever seen. I'm sure they will be very warm. However, if you need a sock that fits in your hiking boots, unless your boots are too big, look elsewhere. My winter hiking boots, which fit perfectly with a pair of merino wool socks, are TOO TIGHT in them. I only tried this for testing purposes and I am not deducting any points for this as I assumed that the socks would be very thick and therefore did not buy them for this purpose. They are better suited for less active winter activities that can carry a large trunk, such as sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, etc. But for travelers, thinner merino wool socks are better. These socks are very loose even with my average foot width. They are the right length but are much looser than any other socks I currently own. Based on my experience with loose-fitting wool socks, this is more of a problem in a backpack - falling or bunching up. I don't recommend them unless you want to wear a pair of thinner socks underneath or you have very wide or thick feet. That's the main reason I splice a star. Although I didn't buy them for use in boots I still find them looser than I prefer when lounging around the house, camping etc. But they do the job well for me - warm socks for winter. Camping (sleeping in a sleeping bag when the temperature is below zero).
