The other main benefit is that it doesn't rotate like cylinders. So if you have a low air pump (4L/min) or a large area you want the air stone to stay in the center, this is better. If you have an air pump with a higher airflow (>15 l/min) and you don't care if the vent moves, cylindrical shaped vents are cheaper and work better.
