I bought a L but usually wear a M/8. I'm glad I did. The elastic band fit me great, any smaller probably would have been too tight. To dress up the elastic waist I added a shiny brooch to the band to make it look more like a belt. This is a very long skirt. I wore it at my natural waist (I have a high waist and long-ish legs) and the dress was long enough that you could only see my flat shoes when I walked. This would be great for cold weather too because you could wear pants, leggings, a base layer underneath and no one would know. But because it was fairly light weight and flows away from the body, it could work for warmer weather too.
