I've just received the new StarSense Explorer 4" refractor telescope with new technology and I have to say I'm very impressed. Conventional Computerized telescopes are a little expensive and often difficult to master. In this case, you don't pay for the technology because it's already built into your smartphone. This allows you to observe many planets and deep sky objects quickly and easily. The Starsense app comes with simply docks with your phone's camera and shows you how to fine-tune with simple, short video clips. The camera in your phone, along with a gyroscope, compares literally instant real-time images of the sky and compares them to an internal star map to show you exactly where where you need to point to any star planet or deep sky objects all you do All you have to do is follow the really cool looking orange arrows until a green box appears on the display and you're there. My first night of trying this was quick and easy. However, this is not optimal. With light sky pollution, the northern skies have had some difficulties, so it doesn't seem ideal in all situations, but with patience it should work. What I really like is that you get new technology without paying for it. Previous types of technology required you to pay for the camera. You already have a smartphone with a camera, and the app is free, but you need to open it with a code unique to your telescope. This scope and technology is really cool and can help both novice and experienced astronomers enjoy the night sky without having to worry about sky maps or star alignment and confusing hand controls. Also, if you need to move the telescope, you can do so without having to readjust it, which is a really nice perk.
