I tested a AA size Revain battery to see the actual usable capacity compared to a Duracell Procell AA battery. The results showed that Revain's battery capacity is approximately 88 percent less than Duracell's. If you calculate the cost per unit of capacity, the batteries are almost identical. The Revain battery was actually slightly more expensive when you factor in cost per watt hour. For that reason I would probably choose the Procell (if I could get a good price on it), just because it means less frequent battery changes. However, the Revain battery is surprisingly good. You probably won't notice the difference in capacitance. So if you don't want to waste time looking around, this is a good choice. I did the same test with Duracell Copper Top and Energizer Max. Their performance was almost identical to that of Procell. Interestingly, I tested the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA battery. This cell was worth 4 times the retail price at $1.27 per cell! However, the capacity was only 1.5 times that of Procell. So don't waste your money on these batteries, they are much more expensive per unit of capacity. The capacity of all these batteries was measured in watt hours. Here are the numbers. Revain AA battery = 2.71Wh. My cost per cell = $0.291. Cost per watt hour = $0.107 Duracell Procell = 3.09 Wh. My cost per cell = $0.321. Cost per watt hour = 0.104 AA Energizer Lithium = 4.86 Wh. My cost per cell = $1.27. Cost per watt hour = $0.261. This test was performed using an op amp circuit to keep the DC load at 100mA. Voltage and current were recorded in ounces per minute and this data was used to calculate ampere hours with a 0.8 volt limit. The watt-hour was then calculated by multiplying the ampere-hour by the average voltage from the start of the test to 0.8 volts. All the batteries mentioned were tested using the same method. Please note that the capacity of these batteries can change significantly under different conditions. The same battery has some of the capacity under heavy loads that it would have under light loads. This data is only good for comparison when it comes to which battery is worth buying at what price. Unless your device uses 100mA DC to charge the battery. In the summer, Revain batteries aren't bad batteries (at least based on this one AA cell test). If you choose to buy a name brand battery, stay at or under $0.33 per cell. Anything over $0.33 per cell is more expensive per unit of capacity than a Revain battery. Oh, and definitely stay away from Energizer Lithium unless cost is an issue. These batteries are only worth the extra cost if your application requires a lightweight, relatively high capacity battery regardless of the cost. These batteries are surprisingly light compared to alkaline/alkaline batteries.
