Not bad - good price

They're fun - not as soft and smeared as Sennelier tops, but good enough that you can do amazingly good things with oil pastels once you realize they're not like pastels or pencils. They are actually a bit close to oil paint. Start dark, end light. There are two techniques you can use that aren't usually mentioned. One of them is painting with oil pastels on canvas. You can then loosen the pastel with odorless turpentine or citrus solvent and rinse off. (Art supplies store or here.) You can brush it on as a primer, then paint over it, or use diluted. You can also print the linocut blocks in one color or color them with oil pastels and print them on paper. See the Oil Pastels section for more instructions. And of course you can draw on toned paper like pastels, but when you're done it will look different. This set contains 50 colored pencils with 2 duplicates. White and black are duplicated as white is used as a highlight or brightener to create pastel tones while black can be mixed to darken colours. The texture is soft enough to use without too much "chipping" (little bits that pop up when paint is applied), but not as soft as Sennelier, the "gold standard" for oil pastels. It actually makes them easier to use in a way, and with this set you can afford to experiment with oil pastels. It can be a difficult medium, but experiment with toned paper and think of it more like oil paint pencils than chalk or colored pencil.

Pros
  • 24-colour oil pastels: ideal for pastels, watercolors, cartouches, crafts etc. as well as canvas, oil and acrylic board.
Cons
  • fades
