Better Than Standard Plastic Grip
Firstly, this metal grip is superior to standard plastic grips and will solve the problem easily. However, the handle is not exactly the size of the plastic on 2000-up models. The footprint is slightly smaller compared to the sheet metal of the tail section, but the screw holes line up perfectly, but it's almost imperceptible. In fact, you will forget about the smaller footprint (especially since it will be hidden). I mean, if you really look under the doorknob, you'll be happy just because you can open the back door.
