Osteoarthritis on the toes? (Hallux Rigidus) Read more:

I have a 30 year old foot injury that resulted in arthritis in my big toe joint. My doctor told me I needed rocker shoes and recommended the Hoka OneOne, but I couldn't afford the $200 price tag. I found her and decided to take a chance. Even when I experimented with insoles, the relief in my toe was immediate. I can stay active and do what I like without slowing down (much). Now that I know rocker briefs work, I've bought a pair of MBTs, which are my "good" shoes, but these exersteps are my daily thugs. Now for the details: the size is true to size. I usually wear a 10.5 but sometimes an 11. 11 was a little large but 10.5 fitted perfectly with one caveat: the heel cup is short so it slides a little at the back. It is designed in such a way that it does not hit the Achilles tendon when the shoe is rocked forward. I laced mine with a running loop and that fixed the problem. Material and quality are ok. No worse than other shoes in the same price range. So far they've held up well to heavy use, including everyday work wear, 3-mile walks with the dog, and cross-country city hikes. They're uncomfortable - at least not out of the box. The soles are thick and heavy. . They're hard rubber, which makes them stiff so they rock properly, but they have no cushioning and they bang on your legs like hell. The insoles are paper thin, no padding. They're not glued, so throw them out and buy good ones. Be careful though, you don't need a lot of arch support as the contour of the outsole pushes the midsole towards the midfoot. I tried 4 different insoles before I found the right one. YMMV The laces are about 2 feet longer than they should be. When shopping for insoles, buy the ones that fit you. If you have arthritis and can't afford it or just don't want to pay, the more expensive brands work just as well. Spend a few bucks more for the insoles and they're comfortable to wear all day. If you need them for fitness, a seesaw paired with extra weight will definitely add more resistance to your workout. Ultimately, I love them and will definitely buy them again.
