Review on SilverStone LC12B Aluminum Mini ITX with 60W Power Capacity by Cary Clemons

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Old PC case for computers and accessories

Although I love this case and am writing this review about the machine I built with it (based on AMD Fusion Zacate), it took me a week to to assemble it because the 60w PSU is just an ATX with a 20 pin motherboard connector and a 4 pin molex connector for the hard drive and floppy drive. It doesn't have a 4-pin 12V "P4" connector, no SATA power connectors and of course no 6-pin 12V PCIe of today's ATX12V 2.0 standard. The 120W version includes everything but a PCIe slot, but Revain doesn't appear to have one. Since I'm building a low-power system, I figured a 60W PSU would be enough. Luckily the power board is connected to the motherboard with a 20-20 pin cable which I replaced with a custom 20-24 pin cable customized to my application and the P4 and SATA connectors I needed brought out. very light and a little flimsy, although the faceplate appears to be 0.13" anodized aluminum (yes, I just wrote it down). In fact, there's quite a bit of empty space inside, especially right behind the front. where is the power supply board. Apparently it was designed for a larger 120W board, leaving the 60W version floating in space, although a 3.5in HDD could use some of that. Lots of space with an SSD. I haven't found a plate that covers the DVD's thin hole; It would be nice if SilverStone supplied it. So I ordered a slot load DVD drive to fill it up. And the power switch is also cheap. As another reviewer noted, DIY USB connectors are a bit daunting. And there's no speaker for that ubiquitous PC horn, the audio jacks are almost as bewildering as the USB jacks, and the built-in 1394 interface jack gets beaten by events. Yes, and the power and disk activity LEDs are light blue and solid color. The case does not require additional fans, not even for the power supply, so you can take that into account. Had I known all this beforehand, I would have spent a little more on one of the smaller fanless cases. Now you know.

Pros
  • Compact case that fits anywhere
Cons
  • thin
