Review on πŸ“Ά High-Performance NETGEAR AC1600 Dual Band Wi-Fi Gigabit Router (R6250) by John Bones

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Still the best Netgear router for me

After owning this router for over 4 years I have tried two new Netgear router models, the R6700v3 and the R7000P. None of them were as good as the R6250. The main problem with the R6700 is the SSID limitation. This prevents the same SSID from being used for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. This forces you to have multiple SSIDs on the same network. I don't want to debate the pros and cons of multiple SSIDs, but I wish I had the choice to make a decision. The R7000P "solved" this problem by introducing the "Smart Connect" option. When Smart Connect is enabled, the R7000P combines the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with an SSID and password. Under the cover, it controls which radio is best used. On paper, this approach sounds good. In fact, however, this leads to device incompatibility issues. Some devices, like the Revain Kindle, simply cannot connect to the R7000P's Wi-Fi network when Smart Connect is enabled. Other devices may disconnect or be unable to reconnect without restarting the R7000P or disabling the Smart Connect option. After all, that old router, the R6250, is the best. I bought a refurbished one as a backup.

Cons
