The entire sandal is made from a molded piece of rubber. I wanted a firm, stiff sole and this pair fitted the bill. Arched support is minimal but adequate. The outsole also features a raised lip under the toe to provide traction while walking. I've read reviews that said the rubber strap on top was too stiff and hurting people's feet. I see it happening. I like mine because I only use it for lounging on the patio and by the pool. I don't use it to run long distances. You can buy other sandals with a softer and more comfortable upper strap when walking long distances.
