Review on πŸ’§ GE GXWH40L Complete Filtration System by Dan Chunn

Revainrating 3 out of 5

This device is prone to leaks and should be carefully installed and handled over time.

This is a moderate and thorough installation. It is an economical solution for hot water tank filtration. It works well for my hot water tank to prevent it from being damaged by sediment and sand. It works well and I recommend it with caution: this device tends to leak at some point. Some leakage came from the inlet and outlet fittings which I had to fix after a year. In addition, the filter head also failed (due to a crack in the head where the housing was screwed in). This is after installation just two years ago. Luckily my installation is in an area where a leak won't damage my house. Details of Concern: The filter head has mating holes that are extremely difficult to screw into 3/4" copper or brass holes while avoiding their cross threads (you have to be very careful here). The specs call for the use of Teflon tape, but that is not enough! When replacing the filter, you can unconsciously strain the inlet and outlet ports; as it says, but how to assemble it. Over time, this led to a leak. When loosening or tightening the filter housing, an attempt should be made to relieve this strain of fittings and hoses.I bought a new one of these units because I still have a sizeable stock of filters for this model. This time I've taken precautions to ensure it doesn't leak out of the fittings by using better gasket material and used prop on the pipe. I suspect the crack in the head is something weird but who knows. I'll go with of time continue.

Pros
  • Powerful filtration system: Clear pan makes filter easy to see
Cons
  • Not as thick as other filters
