I bought this because of the design. The spirals on each side penetrate deep into the cast iron grates and clean effectively. A tip is to use the brush while the grates are still warm and to dip the brush in the water frequently while cleaning. This works very well. The tip of the brush is shaped to reach into and clean the crevices in the grid seams. I usually clean the grates with a brush and then re-oil them while the grates are still warm to season them. To do this I use a fairly heavy towel or cloth or a paper towel with tongs to apply the oil. This prevents bristles from accumulating on the gratings. I didn't have bristles, but that saves me that problem.
