I have a lot of Cat5e spur cable left over from running network connections through the house. Rather than buying patch cords I figured it would be more economical to make my own patch cords. However, I encountered a problem. The first cables I made didn't fit RJ45 jacks, resulting in no communication between the PC and the router. After careful inspection, I found that the locking tab was damaged. This was because the connector was stuck too deep in my crimping tool. I redid the connections being careful not to push the connector too far into the crimping tool and all is fine.
