Expensive, and doesn't work well (and check model numbers closely)

Originally I was okay with this unit and its quirks, but with time they've just gotten worse. For as expensive an item as this is, I expected more quality than I got.It completely stops sending USB traffic to my Linux box when it's rebooted, and the hotkey feature has stopped working altogether.I was hoping for more because I liked the design. It actually emulates the presence of a keyboard and mouse on the servers that are not selected. Other, cheaper units emulate plugging and unplugging of the keyboard/mouse. So this makes the transitions very fast and smooth over those others. The reasons it only gets two stars is 1) rather expensive compared to comparable units; 2) the unit can lock up when a server is powered down (more below); 3) I had to upgrade to this higher-end unit (meaning, pay more than I should have) just to get hotkey functionality, and the company's generally confusing model numbering didn't help. The unit would lock up when we would power down a server in our rack. Even the front panel buttons wouldn't let us change servers. Turns out, the issue was with "wake-on-keyboard" capability. If your server supports this feature via USB, then the server has to supply power and some logic to the keyboard even when shutdown. This apparently confuses the unit and it locks up. You have to unplug the USB connector to the server to get it to unlock. You can also disable this feature in your server's BIOS if it's not needed, but for the price you pay, you should expect it to be less fallible. Also, you have to be real careful when selecting these units. The UR-14 costs 50% less and is the lower-end version of this unit, the UR-14-PLUS. They basically do the same thing, but the UR-14 has no hotkey switching, which to me should be standard on any KVM. It's silly to me any manufacturer would leave it off. So I had to pay double to get hotkeys, which to me was a ridiculous.price to pay for what should be a standard feature.I no longer recommend this model. I've gone to a $30 TrendNet KVM and I'm getting far better results.

Pros
  • No problems. It works as it should.
Cons
  • Not compatible with all operating systems
