First, forget the negative reviews about blurry images. This is a user error! You MUST rotate both settings to get a clear picture, you MUST do this with any night vision device of this type. My 8 year old son figured it out in seconds. Now for my experiences with them. I bought 2 of these hoping one works. I am very disappointed with the quality control of these two devices. There is tremendous distortion at the 10-11 o'clock position in block number 1. It's too much to ignore and it's a shame because it gives a vivid picture. The second block was a miserable failure. There is no distortion, but the picture is 2 tones brighter. It's very dark compared to the first block. You can hear a high-pitched tone coming from the emitter when it's on. When I opened the box with a device, there were several plastic bags and 2 instructions. It should be a temporary return. If you're lucky these units will work fine, my average isn't that good but I'll order a third one and hope for the best. So, now to the 3rd device. This is a very clear and bright image. Compared to Gen 1 I paid 5x more in 2007 which is much better. Only by moonlight on a cloudy night can I see well over 100 meters. You can turn the device on and off and it retains enough light to see for 2-10 minutes. You would have no problem identifying targets up to 100 yards with no IR on. IR is good for 30-40 yards. I didn't find myself needing to use it at all, and you wouldn't unless you wanted more detail or had less than 5% ambient light. My only complaint about this device is that there are scratches in the FOV. . Not very noticeable, the darker outside. That's just cosmetic. Pros: You can scan your property through a closed window, which my thermal imaging camera cannot. Long battery life. Captures light very well and the 5x zoom gives a very clear image. Very quick start. commonly found battery. Cons: It's big Judging by the fact that I bought 3 and only 1 worked, it's probably cheaply made and won't last long. The lens cap must be attached. Price. These shots were taken with a mobile phone looking out of a window in cloudy moonlight. IR was not used and both devices turned on and off. The firing range was 20 and 50 meters. It's easily a 5 star block if it works
