A bit too tight as some reviews also said but that is what makes the tongue/strap so and not the base of the shoe which is comfortable. These shoes cannot be worn with socks, my son's foot can barely fit in ankle socks. Once I figured it out, I found that the language wasn't broad enough, but that's not a big problem. The real problem was that the strap was very short. I fixed this by putting a thin layer of velcro behind the point where it stops so it can be attached and closed without squeezing my son's foot and leaving pressure/irritation on the top of his foot , where there is a seam at the bottom tongue. I just needed a little more air to breathe. The shoe fits and still looks great with a little adjustment. Given the low price ($11) and the durability that Merrell is known for, I'd say it's a win. Just a small error in quality control.
