Review on πŸ“ Big Horn 19201 Caliper Plastic: Precision Measuring Tool for Accurate Results by Ryan Sandell

Revainrating 2 out of 5

For the money there are much better alternatives.

As soon as I got this thing I was ready to slam it in the review. It wasn't smooth, didn't seem to repeat itself, had sand in the thumb wheel --- but after a bit of use it has smoothed out and works better. Disclaimer, I'm not a locksmith, I'm a carpenter and our standards are too weak compared to even "sloppy" workmanship. The jaws don't appear to be perfectly parallel. When I hold them with a light on the back, like my monitor, the light goes out at the top before it goes out at the bottom. A .0015" thickness gauge won't fit in the gap, so it's tiny. And when I measure something, the size changes as I move it up and down my lips. When I measure the top of the jaws with a feeler gauge, it's accurate every time. However, the measurement is not performed when using the lower points of the jaws. And there is no such thing as accuracy (repeatability) when measuring with tips. The depth gauge is stronger than my other calipers, which is good for woodworking, but it's also tapered and pointed, which is less suited to wood. If I were a locksmith they would be beyond useless but if I were a locksmith I wouldn't even buy them, for a mechanic they can be of some use if you work carefully but I wouldn't trust them. They're fit for a carpenter, and indeed I'll keep them in case my good calipers run out of battery. And most of the time I don't use calipers to measure units, I just hand the measurement over. I bought a return in the warehouse deal but the packaging was not opened, only the outside was damaged. Basically I got them cheap so I'm not disappointed. If I had paid full price I would have sent them back. Vernier calipers are in the same price range, they are accurate, precise and beautifully finished. This was supposed to be a 1 star rating for Big Horn, but I'm feeling very generous today.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Not an assault rifle
