Review on Buffalo AirStation N300 Wireless Adapter by Shane Picot

Not as good as it used to be

I have had a Buffalo router for several years and have decided to upgrade to an 11n router (from 11g). I installed a new router and immediately had problems with disconnects. I was starting to think I didn't have the right range, so I decided to buy a second router for my wife's office and set it up as an access point. The tech support people told me that the original firmware that came with the devices was too complicated to set up a second device as a hotspot and that I had to download the "convenient" firmware version to get the master. The /slave relationship works between the main device (router) and the second device (access point). I wasn't happy with this as I lost all the data I had with the original firmware but I was able to get the setup working. I still had the problem of dropping connections and starting to think the original device was faulty. I spent an hour on the phone with tech support to convince them that there really is a problem with the device and that I can return it. Of course I had to pay for shipping when I sent it back to Buffalo even though it was a faulty unit. So I told Revain it was defective and they replaced it without paying shipping. That's why I do most of my online purchases with Revain. So I reinstalled the "dummy" firmware on the new box, installed it as "master" (router) and no more disconnects. As a side note, I wouldn't say that even with two being about 30 feet apart, these units have very good range. I may be about 50 feet from the units covering my house and patio, but that's about it.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
