I don't know how deep it goes through painted drywall, but I have a feeling it only detects moisture right at the surface. The reason I say this is because I don't think my bathroom drywall, which is painted the same as my room, has the same level of moisture in the drywall. Works best on wood and concrete in my opinion. Bare surfaces appear even more precise. UPDATE: I was looking through my reviews and came across this review. After a few months of use I believe there are inaccuracies in the wood measurement. I thought I had a moisture problem! Anyway, I had to buy a cone counter from the same company. It had a calibration that allows you to check the contacts and accuracy. This showed that I had no moisture problems on the same wood. Pinless technology is not as accurate as pinned models.
