King of Space.

Just wanted to provide feedback on this as there aren't many at the moment. This is partly a review of this stick and partly a comparison to other sticks. For reference I've used the following sticks extensively: Saitek X52 and X52 Pro, Logitech 3D Extreme Pro, old FCS, Warthog and now this one. Also, I play almost all flight types including DCS, IL-2 in my time, SWG in my time, E:D and SC. Otherwise my favorite stick. It's weird to say that when I have a warthog, the build quality and overall feel is definitely better with the warthog. The key layout also suits the sow much better. However, when you factor in the price difference and pivot point, this stick will be my daily driver. Another big advantage of this racket over a boar, in my opinion, is the lighter springs. A boar is great for flying an old fighter plane or something very slow, but not so good for dogfights in a space sim or when you need very precise movements. I generally find this joystick easier for space sims in general. The new model doesn't look like a major upgrade from the old one. I'm not sure what happened to the orange coloring, but I digress. The main differences are that the buttons on the base now have textured markings (which is a lifesaver in VR or if you just don't want to look down), most buttons are now textured and more ergonomic, and the spring seems to do a lot be less noisy and a little better. Although maybe it's just because it's new and my old FCS is old. One thing to keep in mind when expanding the textured buttons is that if you're playing in VR, the warthog gas is actually pretty awful. Switches are everywhere and you won't be able to see them. I hope that in the future all joysticks will follow the trend of having unique button textures so you can feel what you are doing. Definitely a big plus if you play in VR. If you are new to Thrustmaster in general there is one more thing to note: TARGET's scripting software is second to none as it allows you to really deeply customize how you want your stick to behave and how it is programmed. It's not exactly user-friendly, but you can do pretty much anything with it. The main disadvantage of this joystick is the lack of buttons on the handle. A lot on the base, but I really want more on the handle. I took two Cougar multifunction displays and found them to be easier to use than the buttons on the base. Add a few more buttons to the Thrustmaster grip next time though. I really want this stick and warthog to have a baby. I'd like metal joysticks with great button placement that I can use with both hands, a pivot, and simple controls like these. Unfortunately, this isn't really an option. With that in mind, I recommend this stick. The Warthog is technically better, but this stick offers more than enough bang for the buck and I'll probably be selling my hog soon as it doesn't have a pivot. The extra knobs on the Hog are really nice, but the lack of a rotating axis makes it almost useless in a space sim. And you can make up for the lack of buttons with VoiceAttack. The bottom line is, whether you're a new pilot or a seasoned veteran, this joystick does it all very well. I have been flying in computer games since childhood and have used a lot of joysticks. This one is my favourite. I think you're going to have a hard time proving that a warthog offers any real combat advantage, so I'm only seeing extra money because you actually want that metal handle (which is really nice.). My current setup uses two of these, two MFDs and a throttle stick on the left. I have rudder pedals but I don't need them with this setup. The two sticks give me total 6DOF freedom in space sims, and the throttle still allows me to fly regular airplanes (or long-distance flights in space sims) without trying to use two sticks. The MFD then fills the need for an almost infinite number of buttons. You can hang everything on a velcro board, sit in an office chair and compete with the biggest and coolest simpit rigs for less than what you would pay for a basic warthog hive in some places. Just buy two of these and you won't seriously regret it. This is my .02, hope it helps someone. Have a good flight, o7

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
